Since 2012, CO2 emissions from aviation have been included in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). This means that all aircraft operators, regardless of their origin, operating in Europe are required to monitor, report and verify emissions, and pay for their emissions by surrendering emissions allowances. These allowances cover a specific level of emissions from their flights each year, and can be traded.
