Since 2003, the European Commission (EC) requires EU Member States to increase the share of renewable energy in the transport sector.
The objective of the Energy for Transport legislation and regulations is to increase the share of renewable energy (such as biofuels) in the transport sector and to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from transport fuels.
On 1 January 2022, the updated Energy for Transport legislation and regulations entered into force, which implement parts of the updated European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and the Dutch Climate Agreement. These pages offer guidance on these regulations.
